CnJ Dutton Rally New South Wales 2008

Dutton Rally New South Wales 2008

The sixth annual Dutton Rally New South Wales has unfortunately, and always prematurely, concluded. The New South Wales Dutton Rally was the third and final round of the Dutton National Series. Round 1 was Alphera Dutton Rally in Victoria on 16th to 18th May 2008, and Round 2 was in Western Australia over 25th to 27th July 2008. The New South Wales Dutton was held over 21st to 23rd November 2008 and was one of the most competitive rallies of the 2008 Series. The Event was comprised of 30 individual driving exercises and was based in Goulburn. It was professional staged at Wakefield Park, Fairbairn Park, Sutton Road and Sydney Raceway. This year's Rally again incorpoarated a Charity Gala Dinner on the Saturday night with all the proceeds going to the Sunnyfield Association.

CNJ Motorsport would like to congratulate Stephen Kakavas and Hamish Richmond for successfully completing all three Rounds throughout 2008 in their 2007 Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 9. But more importantly, on getting 2nd place overall for the Crew Outright New South Wales Dutton and 3rd place Crew Outright in the 2008 National Dutton Rally Series. Below is an excerpt written by Hamish Richmond and posted on a chat group recently:

"This year fellow WRX Club of Qld member Stephen Kakavas and myself competed in the Dutton Rally National Series in a 2007 Mitsubishi Evolution IX - recently featured on the cover of the Club magazine. The car has had some modifications done to it to make it better suited to tarmac rally competition, but still faithfully remains a daily driver with all the interior comforts of the standard car. In fact, the only weight reduction measure was the removal of the jack and spare wheel.

For those who don't know, the Dutton Rally is a national tarmac rally series contested in various states throughout Australia. This year the rally was held in Victoria, Western Australia and most recently New South Wales. Each rally consists of approximately 38 individual motorsport events comprising anything from hill climbs, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1000m sprints, motorkhanas, skidpans, go-to-whoa, battle motorkhana and circuit sprints. Individuals can compete on their own but more fun and greater emphasis is placed on the Crew results – that is a driver and co-driver combined (both people drive, there are no navigation events). There are several classes contested, but the most prized class is the Outright Crew Championship.

For the VIC round in May we finished 5th outright amongst some very fast, dedicated track cars. In WA we broke a gearbox on the first day, but we were able to find a replacement and recover to finish 8th outright. Just over a week ago we finished the NSW round in 2nd place outright, which also secured us 3rd place in the national series - a very pleasing result for a road car.

The car runs an Autronic ECU with dual ECU maps to allow us to run pump fuel for the long highway runs between events and race fuel at the track. The car preparation was performed by C-N-J Motorsport and was so versatile that I was easily able to drive it from Brisbane to Shepparton (regional VIC) in two days then compete in it the next day with no ill effects from non-compliant suspension, race seats, noisy exhaust or fuel leaks etc.

Before anyone asks, we were using the Mitsubishi while Stephen's WRX is being prepared… which is also being tuned by C-N-J.

Further to Stephen's two C-N-J prepared cars, I also have an STi (Autronic) and a MINI Cooper S (Unichip) also tuned by C-N-J. So if you are thinking of having some work done to any of your vehicles, mild or wild - call Bill or Kel at C-N-J Motorsport.

Congratulations once again, Stephen and Hamish for such a fantastic result. Keep up the good work, and we look forward to following your progress in your next Racing Event.
